Nutrition program faculty members, Cynthia Lair and Scott Murdoch, PhD, have teamed up to create a book that addresses an important topic: how parents and coaches can feed young people for optimal sports performance as well as vital health. The book, called Feeding the Young Athlete, was released last summer.
Cynthia Lair, who teaches the popular cooking class at Bastyr, Whole Foods Production, and whose best-selling book Feeding the Whole Family is packed with tasty whole foods recipes, came up with the idea for the book. She decided that her knowledge of nutrition and talent for formulating healthful and delicious recipes, coupled with Dr. Scott Murdoch's exercise science expertise, could create a powerful and much-needed book.
The book provides nutritious, whole-foods diets specifically designed for young people involved in sports activities. The high-performance recipes will satisfy even the most finicky young eaters. The book is written in a way that coaches, parents and players 12 years and older can easily understand, including: when and what to eat before a game or practice, which foods give growing athletes the fuel they need, how to stay hydrated and what's best to drink, and how to get the whole team involved.
Dr. Murdoch has a broad background in both exercise science and nutrition. He has a master's degree in exercise physiology, a doctoral degree in nutrition and human performance, and is also a registered dietician. He has completed over 90 triathlons and participated in the Ironman World Championships three times. He also has played tennis professionally.
