Groups Criticize Patient Privacy
The new patient privacy regulations, which will take effect
two years after they become policy on Feb. 26th, are meant
to keep patient information from being distributed without
consent. Patients could sign a one-time consent form on
their first visit to a doctor allowing disclosures for
routine matters like billing and treatment, but they would
have to explicitly authorize most other uses of their
records. Employers will be barred from perusing medical
information about their workers unless it's directly related
to providing health care. A group of 39 health industry
organizations have asked the federal government to postpone
these rules, arguing they will hinder those who need
medicine quickly.
Motivation Key to Healthy Lifestyle And Heart
Suffering from exercise avoidance is a problem that many of
us face. We know that making exercise a habit can lower the
risk of developing heart disease, obesity, hypertension,
colon cancer and help to increase bone density. Yet we are
full of excuses. Throw them out the window. The key to
getting motivated relates to wanting to see improvements in
your body and health. It all boils down to the fact of
whether or not you are willing to make time to exercise.
The fate of your body and health is in your hands.
Congressional Republicans Plan to Cancel New Ergonomics Rules
Key congressional Republicans are devising a plan to cancel
the sweeping ergonomics rules issued in the last four days
of the Clinton administration. They view these rules
requiring businesses to educate workers about
repetitive-motion injuries and eliminate workplace hazards
that cause them "one of the most burdensome regulations ever
put on the back of small businesses." Labor unions say the
rules can prevent hundreds of thousands of disabling
injuries each year, but business groups say they are vague
and prohibitively expensive. Legislation is being prepared
that would cancel the rules and bar the U.S. Occupational
Health and Safety Administration from issuing similar ones.
Genome Project Will Have Broad Impact
Two independent groups of researchers have invested years of
effort to spell out the human genetic code. Newly released
details of what it means to be genetically human will change
forever the way medicine is practiced, impact dramatically
on science and industry, and facilitate the genetic
engineering of humans, genetics experts say. Major
practical applications are expected to come from the
formulation of new drugs based on a knowledge of the
chemistry of the genes, the proteins they produce and the
physiological pathways of those proteins. Treatment of
cancer, heart disease, diabetes, alcoholism and drug
addiction will likely benefit first and most directly from
genomics information.
Health Chief Vows to Shield CDC Research from Politics
The incoming Secretary of Health and Human Services, Tommy
G. Thompson, has assured the staff at the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention that research will not be
politicized in any way, shape or manner whatsoever. He
outlined his plans to support a patients' bill of rights,
affordable drugs for seniors, affordable health insurance
and increased organ donation.

Dr. Galland's Integrated
Medicine
In the column "Foods that Heal" Leo Galland, M.D. discusses detoxifying foods which protect against the effects of environmental pollution, free-radical induced cell damage and cancer through dietary anti-oxidants. Foods that are richest in these anti-oxidants are red, yellow and green vegetables, uncooked nuts and seeds (like almonds and sunflower seeds), and fish. He also outlines the important infection-fighting foods such as garlic, ginger, onions, and tumeric, as well as vegetables containing a high concentration of a group of natural chemicals called saponins, which have immune-stimulating and antibiotic effects--soybeans, chickpeas, bean sprouts, asparagus, tomatoes, potatoes and oats.
The Healer Within
The self-applied health enhancement methods movements are meant to be the seeds of your own inventiveness. In "Gentle Movements and Postures, Part II" Dr. Roger Jahnke reminds you not to sabotage your mastery by thinking they must be done a certain way. Make it up, make it fun, spread the word. Learn from others, add favorites, steal from the masters; they are always willing to share. Bring the breath and relaxation practices together with the effort of the movements, that is the balance. When you have made contact with the extent to which gentle movement has a profound health effect, you have become a part of the solution to the medical crisis.
Mind Over Matter
In the column "Sounds
Like Silence: and chronic pain" Barry Bittman,
M.D. reminds us of the importance of having music in our
lives, along with laughter and joy. This is particularly
important for those following an integrated, whole person
approach to control of severe and chronic pain. One day in
the near future, instead of just receiving a few pain pills,
you might be surprised with a healthy dose of music therapy.
Mind Boosters
A study of more than 6,000 persons ages 65 and older showed that a high intake of vitamin E from foods and/or dietary supplements was associated with reduced memory loss and other cognitive decline. This study was important because most of the previous research had focused on antioxidant nutrients as treatment therapy in persons who already had Alzheimer's or Parkinson's disease. In the column "Vitamin E Reduces Mental Decline Among Older Persons" Ray Sahelian, M.D. shares what he recommends for his patients as insurance to protect against these diseases from ever occurring.
Understanding Homeopathy
Homeopathic medicines are often effective in treating measles, though medical attention should also be sought due to the possibility of complications from this disease. In the column "Measles" Dana Ullman, M.P.H. presents nine specific homeopathic remedies and explains how each can assist according to the stage and severity of a case of measles.

"Intuition in Medicine" With Norman Shealy M.D.
Medical diagnosis is an art and a science. In "Intuition in Medicine " Daniel Redwood, D.C. interviews Norman Shealy M.D. about the role of intuition as a doctor figures out what is wrong with you and what to do about it. Dr. Shealy shares his journey as a medical maverick and his views on how our U.S. society has a "disease-care" not a health care system.

Healthy Child Update
In "Constipation" David L. Hoffmann B.Sc. (Hons), M.N.I.M.H. reminds parents that this condition is a symptom, not a disease. Determining the cause is important. Sudden, acute constipation may be a sign of organic disease. While chronic constipation is more likely to be a signal that dietary changes are needed. Dr. Hoffmann offers natural treatment options that include fiber rich foods and herbs.
