Experience The New and Improved Healthworld!
"HealthWorld is proud to announce the launch of our newly designed site. We have vastly improved the navigation, layout and overall experience for our users," according to James Strohecker, co-founder of HealthWorld. "Many of our users come directly from queries on search engines or from the over 24,000 links to various pages on HealthWorld from other web sites, so most do not enter via the home page. For this reason we realized that every page in HealthWorld needed to act as a "home page" to allow any user entering the site from links or search engines to have full access to what we have to offer. Due to our members demand and results of our surveys, we have decided to retain the original "Health Village" home page which has served so well as a familiar and welcoming entryway for our users since our launch in March 1996. Please come and experience the new site at www.healthy.net. We welcome your comments and look forward to years of being your "Home of Self-Managed Care" for years to come!"

Executive Health: The Skill of Thriving under Pressure
Stress can destroy lives or be a prime motivator at work, depending on how it is handled. Do you have the skill of thriving under pressure? Many people enjoy that rush of adrenaline. But too many 18-hour days, buzzed by adrenaline, lead to the body's stress chemicals going into overdrive. Over time, these will damage the immune system.
Panel Examines Alternative Medicines
A new presidential commission is traveling the country on a two-year quest to determine how to help doctors and consumers sort out what works, what doesn't, and what's too risky, and to integrate alternative remedies that do prove effective into mainstream health care. The White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine Policy is charged with determining how to ensure doctors and patients learn the available evidence - and if something works, how to pay for it.
Study Says Men Help Men Exercise
For college men, exercise works on the buddy system: If their friends exercise, they do. This was not true for women, who relied more on support from their families. And a researcher thinks college women do less exercise than men do because the female buddy system isn't as strong as the men's. This study was an attempt to get a handle on what motivates young adults to exercise, because too few do, and many of the exercisers drop out after they graduate.
Head Off Health Hassles by Organizing Now
Along with resolutions to exercise, eat right and save those tax receipts in the year ahead, think about adding one more: Getting your health care house in order. As managed care becomes the rule of the land, good, up-to-date record keeping may be your best protection against medical snafus. Create a separate file folder for each family member. Add all health data and documentation. Review your health plan benefits. Meet with your primary care physician to review your health care needs and schedule your annual screenings and immunizations.

Dr. Galland's Integrated
Medicine
Epidemics of parasitic infection from contaminated water and of bacterial food poisoning from chicken or hamburger serve notice that the U.S. food and water supply is not safe, according to Leo Galland, M.D. Pesticides and preservatives provide no protection from the current crop of microbes and pose health hazards of their own. In the column "Eating Safely in a Polluted World: You Don't Have to Choose Between Microbes and Chemicals!" Dr. Galland offers several simple, effective measures you can follow to protect yourself and those you love from the effects of eating contaminated food and water--avoiding both microbial and chemical contaminants in food and drink and building resistance to them if you are exposed.
The Healer Within
Every original culture on the planet earth has a system of "hands on" healing. In western cultures this is generally called massage. As the movement toward alternatives to drugs and surgery progresses massage will emerge as one of our primary new, while actually ancient, therapeutic modalities. Hospitals, and even corporations, are hiring massage therapists to help with healing and to prevent the negative impacts of stress. In this column "Self-Applied Massage" Dr. Roger Jahnke explains how to effectively perform self-applied massage.
Mind Over Matter
Music can bring you joy. The column "Music-Making: practical piano tuning insights" by Barry Bittman, M.D. alerts us that music training can impact brain function. In addition to boosting problem solving abilities, music-making has been shown to affect our biology through the mind-body connection. Dr. Bittman sites a number of studies, including one on the potential biological benefits of group drumming music therapy for reversing specific immune system effects of the classical stress response.
Mind Boosters
Huperzine A is an extract from a club moss, whose action has been attributed to its ability to strongly inhibit the enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine in the synaptic cleft. In the column "Huperzine A" Ray Sahelian, M.D. reports that this appears to be a promising alternative to cholinesterase inhibitor drugs used in Alzheimer's disease, and promising for senile memory disorders.
Understanding Homeopathy
Involuntary urination is ironically a problem experienced at both ends of a person's life, both during infancy and aging. Older adults have difficulty with bladder control usually because of either urinary tract disease, nervous system dysfunction, allergic response, ruptured disk, or psychological stress. Women tend to experience involuntary urination after childbirth, surgery, or inflammation of the urethra, while men tend to get it if they have a prostate problem. In the column "Homeopathic Medicines For Involuntary Urination" Dana Ullman, M.P.H. explains the common causes of this condition, and outlines homeopathic remedies that may resolve the problem, rather than just eliminate the symptom.

With allergy problems reaching alarming, epidemic levels, horticulturist Thomas L. Ogren set out to investigate the role that urban landscaping plays in this urgent health crisis. What he discovered was startling: The vastly disproportionate cultivation of all-male plant varieties produces large amounts of intensely irritating airborne pollen. "Allergy-Free Gardening : The Revolutionary Guide to Healthy Landscaping," an extensively researched, comprehensive, plant-by-plant reference alerts gardeners and landscapers to this long-ignored problem and helps them make landscaping choices that can drastically reduce their exposure to harmful allergens.
