Public Urged To Follow Cell Phone Guidelines
In response to growing public concern about the effects of cell phones, the World Health Organization (WHO) is overseeing a multinational research project to further investigate the connection between cell phones and brain cancer. Until the results of that project are completed, the WHO suggests that cell phone users limit their time on a cell phone; consider using a hands-free device; and avoid driving while talking on a cell phone.

Studies Indicate Soy Isoflavones Have Multiple Health Benefits
A broad survey of studies on isoflavones, the soy ingredient to which numerous health improvements have been attributed, has found that the best-known beneficial effect of isoflavones is on reduction of cholesterol levels, lowering the risk of heart disease.

Premature Babies May Feel Pain More As Adults
Premature babies who are given painful medical treatment in the first few weeks after birth may grow up to feel pain more intensely than normal in later life, scientists believe. Based on a study with laboratory rats scientists warm that the sensory pathways may be permanently rewired when a newborn baby experiences unusual pain.

How Much Garlic Do We Need?
Laboratory studies have identified several ways garlic may help prevent cancers, including blocking both the formation and the reactions of certain carcinogens that damage body cells. About two to five cloves of garlic a week are enough to produce benefit.

Coffee-Drinking Increases Arthritis Risk, Researchers Say
Regular coffee drinkers may face a higher risk of arthritis in later life as well as the increased possibility of heart disease and problems caused by excess caffeine. Scientists found that those on four or more cups a day were twice as likely to test positive for arthritis than occasional drinkers.

Dr. Galland's Integrated Medicine
In this column "Essential Fatty Acids--The Key To Health, Part II" Dr. Leo Galland discusses the importance of balancing anti-oxidants and essential fatty acids and problems around trans fatty acids and hydrogenated oils. Because EFAs are polyunsaturated, containing two or more double chemical bonds, they are prone to rancidity, not merely in foods but also in the human body. Rancidity occurs when the double bond is broken by oxygen, producing an oxidized fatty acid. Oxidized fatty acids not only taste badly, they behave badly, disrupting the normal functioning of the cell membranes of which they are a part. Oxidized fatty acids are rapidly generated from the process called free radical-induced cell damage.

The Healer Within
One of the self-healing methods of the ancients that is easy and inexpensive yet absolutely profound is breath practice. In his column this week, "Exhale to Compress the Organs," Dr. Roger Jahnke reveals a breath practice that is quite remarkable. This method takes the exhalation of the full chest and abdominal breath, that Dr. Jahnke discussed in earlier columns, to a radical extreme that dramatically shifts the pressure in the pelvic, abdominal and chest cavities. The exhalation continues, until it feels as if the body and organs are compressing toward the center. This practice has a profound effect on the nervous system and the lymphatic elimination of waste from the tissues. It unleashes a powerful healing energy. It takes just a few moments, costs nothing is always with you, just a breath away.

Keeping Fit with Dr. Wayne Westcott
Are you a compulsive, task-oriented individual? For many such behavior is natural, simply a normal way of life. Do you have the all or nothing attitude where you go as hard as you can until the task is complete? In the column "Keeping Fit: Concerns Over Compulsiveness" Dr. Wayne L. Westcott reminds us that when we are young, this process may prove satisfactory. However, a more relaxed approach to physical labor and exercise is definitely preferred.

Care2 Ask Annie
In her latest column for environmentally conscious consumers Annie Berthold-Bond addresses natural options for natural skin peels, deodorants, and a protective lip balm. Plus how to deal with clogged drains and mold from a roof leak.

"A Psychological Journal as Self-Care" With Ira Progoff, Ph.D.
Writing in a journal offers you a way to be able to tap into resources and knowledge within yourself that can enable you to deal with your problems in new ways. As Tom Ferguson, M.D. interviews Ira Progoff, Ph.D. in "A Psychological Journal as Self-Care" they explore Dr. Progoff's belief that people are much more capable of guiding their own efforts to get unstuck than we've given them credit for. He reminds us that journaling can be a tool to help you deal with difficult times in your life, times of change or decision or loss. Also, it can be a fulfilling experience in its own right, something you can do just for the pure pleasure of it.

Healthy Recipes
What Japanese and Chinese people have known for centuries - that green tea is not only a delicacy, when brewed correctly, but also an easy way to augment one's health and well-being - is now being verified and accepted by the medical profession in the Western world. Green tea contains extremely powerful antioxidants, which protect against health problems, such as cancer and cardiovascular disease. In the column "How To Drink Green Tea For Beginners" Danish chef Oscar Umahro Cadogan gives us recipes with the secrets for brewing green tea, plus variations with peppermint, licorice root and cinnamon, and ginger.

Healthy Bookstore
Of the 1.2 million people diagnosed with cancer each year, at least half seek out alternative and/or complementary care in addition to or in place of conventional treatments. As a result, health-care approaches ranging from traditional Chinese medicine to dietary regimens to the use of supplements such as shark cartilage and coenzyme Q10 are capturing the attention of the medical establishment and gaining momentum as viable -- if not lifesaving -- cancer-fighting strategies. On the forefront of this widening acceptance in the medical community is James S. Gordon, M.D., Georgetown University medical professor, director of the Center for Mind-Body Medicine in Washington, D.C., and creator of the Comprehensive Cancer Care conferences, an important forum for sharing and evaluating both conventional and alternative cancer research.

" ;Comprehensive Cancer Care: Integrating Alternative, Complementary and Conventional Therapies" authored by Dr. Gordon with patient advocate and author, Sharon Curtin, is an authoritative, eloquent guide to more experimental methodologies that have demonstrated improvements in quality of life and life expectancy, or in fact have reversed cancer's destructive trajectory, for patients with all stages of cancer. They address the efficacy of therapeutic diets; controversial treatment using short chains of amino acids; pancreatic enzyme therapy; mind-body techniques; and the use of phytonutrients.

Healthy Child Update
Most parents are unaware that the pesticide-based head-lice treatments they have purchased will probably not work. So, when lice reappear on their child's scalp, parents reapply these toxic treatments more often and for longer periods of time then is safe. The results? Parents unknowingly placing their children in harms way with sometimes disastrous, if not fatal, results. In the column "What Every Parent Should Know About Controlling Head Lice" Michael Alan Morton, Ph.D. outlines how to tell if your child is infested, what to do if your child has head lice, and how to avoid re-infestation.

Healthy Man Update
Most people take it for granted that they'll have children one day. In fact, most people are so confident they can conceive, they use birth control until they're ready for parenthood. Yet 10 to 15 percent of all couples are infertile; half the time it's due fully or partly to the man. In the column "Coping with Male Infertility" Lauri Aesoph, N.D. addresses a number of important potential causes, such as nutrients, stress, drugs and other considerations.
