Director Of Center For Mind-Body Medicine To Chair White House Commission On Complementary And Alternative Medicine Policy
President Clinton today announced the appointment of James
Gordon, M.D. as Chairman of the White House Commission on
Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) Policy. The
Commission will be providing a report to the President on
legislative and administrative initiatives, in order to
maximize CAM healthcare to all Americans. Dr. Gordon will be
the Chair of the Commission, which is composed of 19 others
from the conventional medical and CAM communities.
HealthWorld Online is proud that Dr. Gordon is a member of
its Advisory Board.
Thailand Legitimizes Traditional Chinese Medicine
The Thai Government has recognized the legitimacy of the
traditional Chinese medicine. The decision was based on the
satisfactory result of a five year trial conducted with the
cooperation of Thai and Chinese medical institutions. In
Thailand traditional Chinese medicine can now become more
standardized and specialized, just like modern western
medicine.
Study Shows How Red Wine Fights Cancer
U.S. researchers have revealed the mechanism of how an
antioxidant found in red wine and grapes fights cancer. The
compound resveratrol, which acts like an antibiotic to
protect grapes from fungus, may turn off a protein that
enables cancer cells to survive even chemotherapy.
Resveratrol exists in dozens of foods, including mulberries
and peanuts. All wines have some resverathol but red wine
seems to be its richest source.
Tibetan Medicine Gains Popularity In World Market
Tibet, known as the "roof of the world," attracted global
attention this week with the 2000 International Symposium on
Tibetan medicine held in the capital city of Lhasa. More
than 500 experts on Tibetan medicine search for ways to
preserve this unique, ancient system of medical treatment in
the 21st Century.
Embracing Alternative Medicine
There is a momentous about-face taking place as mainstream
medicine is overcoming its historical aversion to "untested'
alternative therapies. As many physicians point out,
traditional medicine may have no choice but to explore
healing modalities outside the allopathic model. There is
also a massive change in how patients view medical care and
their physicians. More health insurers are covering
alternative therapies. Perhaps most noticeable, though, is
the growing number of young physicians who are openly
talking about alternative medicine, studying it, and weaving
it into their practices.

Dr. Galland's Integrated
Medicine
Iron is unique among essential minerals, because there is no
mechanism for its excretion once absorbed into the body.
Whatever iron is absorbed must either be used or stored and
excessive storage of iron in the body promotes the
generation of free radicals. In this column, "Dangers
of Iron Supplements", Dr. Galland reports that
excess dietary iron has been implicated by some scientists
as a cause of cancer and heart disease, and that it also
increases the risk of bacterial infection. "No one should
ever take iron supplements unless iron deficiency is
present, says Dr. Galland, "with the possible exception of
pregnant women."
The Healer Within
The presence of special breathing practices in the ancient
cultures has always been a mystery to people in the Western
world. In this column, "Full Chest and Abdominal Breathing,"
Dr. Jahnke explains a method that activates all of the
primary benefits of therapeutic breath practice when done
slowly and fully, with intention, concentration and
relaxation.
Mind Over Matter
"Stroke Prevention: tell your wife to take a hike" says
Barry Bittman, M.D. and tell her I told you to do so!
Actually a brisk 30-minute walk each day will do. While
the prospects of stroke may seem frightening, new data is
nothing short of encouraging. A study found that women who
perform a half hour or more of vigorous exercise each day
have the potential to reduce their chances of experiencing
the most common form of stroke by 30%. If you consider the
potential additive effects of established stroke prevention
strategies such as low fat diet, cholesterol reduction,
blood pressure control, and now - exercise, it's clear that
you can shift your odds in a positive direction.
Natural Medicine Research
Huperzine A is an extract from a club moss, whose action has
been attributed to its ability to strongly inhibit the
enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine in the synaptic cleft.
In the column "Huperzine A" Ray Sahelian, M.D. reports
that this appears to be a potential alternative to
cholinesterase inhibitor drugs used for Alzheimer's disease,
and promising for senile memory disorders.
Understanding Homeopathy
Conventional medical treatments tend to focus on treating or
controlling symptoms. Whereas, natural therapeutics
primarily attend to augmenting the person's own inherent
defenses. Although the direct treatment of symptoms often
has immediate effects, its benefits tend to be short-term
and the individuals remain prone to a recurrence of their
problem. In the column "Homeopathic Medicine And The Immune
System" Dana Ullman, M.P.H. goes on to explain how
homeopathic medicines are correctly used in conjunction with
the body's immune system.

Healthy Recipes
Often people only use the juice and the outermost layer of
the rind from lemons. With "Preserved Lemon Rind or
Everything From Lemons" Danish chef Oscar Umahro Cadogan
gives us a way to use almost the whole lemon and thus gain
full advantage of all the culinary and health promoting
qualities lemons have to offer. With this recipe, you'll get
preserved lemon rind, similar to that eaten with tagine in
North Africa and the Middle East, lemon stock, and
cider-lemon vinegar, as well as fresh lemon juice.

Everything Remembers And Is Alive. From the subatomic to
the cosmic, from cells and ideas to souls and God, all
dynamic systems have memory. In "The Living Energy Universe"
using the tools of science, University of Arizona scientists
Dr. Gary Schwartz and Linda Russek demonstrate that
everything in the universe is alive, eternal, and evolving.
Their new model of life, the Universal Living Memory theory,
is re-configuring the scientific landscape.
Schwartz and Russek usher the reader through new doorways to
profound discoveries. Here is stunning but sober emerging
evidence that every idea ever thought and every awareness
ever generated is even now contained in the universe as
information or memory, that consciousness survives death,
that God exists--and is evolving.
As a result of the new theories laid out here, this landmark
book reconciles the conflicting claims of science and
spirituality. Destined to win over even the staunchest of
skeptics, "The Living Energy Universe" provides compelling
proof: Everything remembers.

In the column "Asthma" Michael Schachter, M.D. describes the
pathology of asthma and how it is generally treated by
conventional medicine. He then discusses the shortcomings of
this conventional approach by outlining how a complementary
physician might approach the asthma patient. Dr. Schacter
emphasizes how to prevent asthma attacks by working on one's
environment, lifestyle and nutritional supplements.
Healthy Woman Update
Yeast infections are the most common type of vaginal
infections. The column "Yeast Infections" prepared by the
American Institute of Preventive Medicine, reports that
vaginal yeast infections result from the overgrowth of
Candida albicans which is normally present in harmless
amounts in the vagina, the digestive tract and the mouth.
Some women rarely have a yeast infection. Others have them
regularly. The column covers what triggers and prevention
tips, plus a guide for when you need a doctor's assistance,
and self-help suggestions for when you do not.
