Continuing our Wellness Journey - Sensing
This week our journey focuses on Sensing, the third of 12 keys to wellness in the Wellness Inventory. It is through the senses--seeing, touching, smelling, hearing, tasting--that we come to know and enjoy the world. Our abilities to work, to feel pleasure, to communicate with others, and to impact the world are directly related to our abilities to appreciate and use our sensory input efficiently and creatively. Simply Well - "Keep Friendship Alive" - John W. Travis, M.D., M.P.H.
People need people. And often they don't realize how great their need is
until some moment of great joy or deep sorrow. In "Keep Friendship Alive" John W. Travis, M.D., M.P.H., explains why one of the healthiest things you can do for yourself is to cultivate vibrant friendships - the kind that will supply you with the genuine support everyone needs, friendships in which you can dare to reveal your feelings, act spontaneously, care, touch, and serve. "Your Partner Is Not You!" - Harville Hendrix, PhD
This is the first of a four article series, "Discover Each Other and Deepen Your Connection" by Dr. Harville Hendrix, author of Getting the Love You Want. If you are still waiting and wishing that your partner will just see the light and behave the way you think he or she should, then you are living a fantasy. Most of us live with a figment of our imagination rather than the real flesh and blood person who is our partner. We see our partners through our image of what we think they are, rather than seeing them as they are or as they see themselves. And here’s the rub: when you take up the banner to “improve” your partner, you are annihilating him or her. View more

"Reiki and Medicine" - Pamela Miles
Reiki treatment has no known medical contraindications. It does not involve the use of any substance and the touch is non-manipulative. When necessary, as in the case of burns or sensitive IV sites, Reiki can be offered just off the body. There is no time when Reiki is dangerous. However, all treatment, regardless the risk, should be used with common sense. View more
From Fatigued to Fantastic - "Candida—Eliminating Yeast/Fungal Overgrowth" - Jacob Teitelbaum, MD
If you're on a strict high-protein, you still need carbohydrates. The good ones. In "Good Carbs, Bad Carbs – Which Do You Eat?" Nan Kathryn Fuchs, Ph.D. explains that good carbs are whole foods from plants that contain both sugars and fiber, such as beans, whole grains, starchy vegetables, and fresh fruit. Substitute some of them for saturated (animal) fats and they can help lower your cholesterol. Their fiber binds to cholesterol, carrying it out of your body, and also keeps your blood sugar level. Omega-3 Cuisine - "WHAT Healthcare Reform?" - Alan Roettinger
Let’s get one thing straight. No one is talking about healthcare reform. There has been a smattering of talk about medical care reform - something about digitizing medical records and putting these in a database so that doctors anywhere can have access to a patient’s medical history. Hardly anyone disagrees that these modernizing measures would help cut costs and improve the quality of medical service. View More

The Healer Within: "Rapid Abdominal Breathing" - Roger Jahnke, OMD
A classic breath practice that is common to both the Yoga tradition of India and the Qigong tradition of China is the subject of "Rapid Abdominal Breathing" by the Dr. Roger Jahnke. The central activity of this breath technique, called bastrika in India, is the rapid expansion and contraction of the abdomen. This method has a major effect on the function of the organs in the abdominal and pelvic cavities. It can be done in a few moments and requires no special attire or equipment. View more
Mind-Body Health - "Doctors and Patients: Not on the Same Wavelength" - David S. Sobel, MD
According to an article in Mayo Clinic Proceedings, the actual difference between optimists and pessimists just might amount to about 12 years of life. There is now proof that it's not the stress that kills us. Rather, it's our perception of stress that makes the difference. In "The Glass That's Half Full: Optimism and Longevity" Barry Bittman, M.D. encourages us to begin with a healthy dose of determination, add willingness to develop a positive belief system and sprinkle in a comforting sense of hope.
