Chromium Study May Help Juvenile Diabetes Patients
Children's Hospital Los Angeles will conduct the first double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial to study the effects of chromium picolinate supplementation in overweight pediatric patients with poorly controlled type 1 diabetes. More than 15 scientific studies support the safety and role of chromium in improving insulin function and glucose metabolism in people with type 2 diabetes. This study will investigate whether adding chromium picolinate to the daily diet will improve blood glucose of patients 12 to 18 years of age with type 1 diabetes, also known as juvenile diabetes.
U.S. Public Sharply Divided on Privacy Risks of Electronic Medical Records
U.S. adults are divided right down the middle on whether the potential privacy risks associated with a patient electronic medical record system outweigh the expected benefits to patients and society. Key concerns are that sensitive health information might leak because of weak data security; that there could be more sharing of patients' medical information without their knowledge; that computerization could increase rather than decrease medical errors; that some people won't disclose necessary information to health care providers because of worries that it will go into computerized records; and that existing federal health privacy rules will be reduced in the name of efficiency.
Saliva Could Replace Blood, Urine Exams
Saliva tests could begin replacing blood and urine tests within the next two years for everything from drugs to diseases, the benefits of which include ease of collection, not requiring needles and doable without the embarrassing need of having a doctor or drug tester watch the process.

WELLNESS and
HEALTHY LIVING
Simply Well
In order to stay happy and healthy, your soul needs nourishment, just as your body does. In "Find Your Center-Learn to Meditate" John W. Travis, M.D., M.P.H., offers practical tips to re-collect your scattered parts and bring them back together. Try they out and discover which ones work for you.
Healthy
Computing
Do you tense your shoulders as you rush through the day, focusing on your tasks, anxious to complete your jobs well. Tense shoulders, which often creep up toward your ears, can contribute to tension in your arms, wrists and hands, and interfere with blood circulation, resulting in cool hands. In "Drop Your Shoulders" Erik Peper, Ph.D. and Katherine Hughes Gibney recommend that you follow this suggestion and allow your arms to relax and warmth to flow into your hands.
Healthy Home
Vinegar is a mainstay of the old folk recipes for cleaning, and with good reason. In "Vinegar Kills Bacteria, Mold and Germs" Annie B. Bond of Care2 notes that numerous studies verify that a straight 5 percent solution of vinegar — such as you can buy in the supermarket — kills 99% of bacteria, 82% of mold, and 80% of germs (viruses). Keep a clean spray bottle filled with straight 5 percent vinegar in your kitchen near your cutting board, and in your bathroom, and use them for cleaning.

ALTERNATIVES
Nutritional Medicine and Longevity
In "Homocysteine: The Key To Heart Attack, Stroke, & Cardiovascular Disease" Richard A. Kunin, M.D. notes that homocysteine is a preventable and treatable factor in blood vessel disease. In fact over 200 research studies already provide a consensus that identifies this molecule as the most important strategic factor in heart attacks and strokes, far more powerful than cholesterol and fat. If the chemical pathways to its useful end-products are impaired, homocysteine build-up causes more mischief than any other physiologic "ortho"molecule. People with high homocysteine scores are at greater risk for heart attack.
Healthy Alternatives
In "Ten Common Homeopathic Medicines" Dana Ullman, M.P.H. offers homeopathic medicines that are used for common ailments. A helpful guide for those who wish to try a homeopathic approach by treating themselves for non-threatening acute conditions.
Healthy Man Update
Conventional drugs may relieve the symptoms of bacterial infection. However, there is little conventional medicine has to treat most viral conditions. In "Infectious Disease: Effective Alternatives to Antibiotics" Dana Ullman, M.P.H. notes that since homeopathic medicines stimulate the body's own defenses, rather than directly attack specific pathogens, homeopathy has much to offer in the treatment of viral diseases.

Healthy Bookstore - The Body Restoration Plan
In "The Body Restoration Plan" Dr. Paula Baillie-Hamilton, an expert in human metabolism, argues that our own natural weight-regulation system is being poisoned by the toxic chemicals we encounter in our everyday lives, and that this damage makes it increasingly difficult for our bodies to control and lose weight. Toxins in food, water, air, packaging, cosmetics, and household products enter our bodies as Chemical Calories, hampering our metabolic and appetite-regulating systems and making us fatter.

Echoes of Silence
Have you ever sat with your feet dangling in the cosmic abyss and been consumed by a presence, a force, an encompassing state of being? Love is the discovery we make as we engage in spiritual inquiry. In "The Cosmic Abyss" Robert Rabbin relates a moving story that reminds us tht as we open to and embrace this power, this presence of love, we forge a new alliance with life and with work. We can depend upon that power to take us forward, one step at a time, into clear and impeccable decisions.
