HEALTH NEWS

Parents can affect child's future health
Children lacking parental support face increased risks of developing depression and poor health as adults. Researchers investigated whether the health effects of parental support during childhood persist throughout adulthood into old age. Their results showed that having attentive mothers and fathers increases a child's likelihood of enjoying psychological and physical well-being throughout life.

Vitamin D Lowers Risk of Multiple Sclerosis
A study has found that women who take vitamin D supplements through multivitamins are 40% less likely to develop multiple sclerosis (MS) than those who do not take supplements. Because the number of cases of MS increases the farther you get from the equator, one hypothesis has been that sunlight exposure and high levels of vitamin D may reduce the risk of MS.

Ginger May Help Reduce Arthritis-related Knee Pain
Knee pain from arthritis is one of the most common medical problems in the United States today. As we continue to age, there will be an increased demand for good pain relief. However, rising medical costs may ultimately limit access to newer medications, physical therapy and invasive procedures. Inexpensive and safe dietary supplements such as glucosamine, chondroitin and MSM have been shown to reduce the pain associated with osteoarthritis. A common spice - ginger - may soon be added to that list. In a recent study ginger was shown to be effective in reducing arthritis-related knee pain and increasing function.

WELLNESS and HEALTHY LIVING

CONTINUING OUR 12-STAGE JOURNEY TO WELLNESS
This week our journey focuses on the power of TRANSCENDING, the 12th of 12 keys to wellness drawn from the Wellness Inventory whole person assessment program. The final form of energy in the wellness energy system is a subtle one that has only recently been given scientific credence. It is the realm of the transcendent or the spiritual (a word that's only now becoming acceptable in everyday speech). The human ability to transcend ordinary consciousness is actually an age-old gift that opens mind and heart to the potential of love, and to the miracle and magnificence of the moment, so often forgotten in the daily grind of our busy lives.

Simply Well
As the body, mind, and soul are always connected, exercising involves your mind and your spirit. In "Move Your Body and Move Your Soul" John W. Travis, M.D., M.P.H., presents exercise as a natural way of achieving an altered state of consciousness in which the rational and problem-oriented mind is temporarily put on hold. A deep sense of connectedness to all life and a sense of inner knowledge are potential benefits when exercise is done consciously.

Staying Healthly Tips
Everyday choices impact the quality of your health. In "10 Tips for Eating Healthy at Work & School" Elson M. Haas, M.D. addresses how to effectively change habits to those that support your health, vitality, and optimum weight.

NATURAL ALTERNATIVES

Integrative Dentistry
Root canals have been controversial for many years. Now researchers are asking whether root canals may be a source of illness and weakened immune system - based on research indicating the presence of residual infections even after the root canal has been performed and completed in a tooth. Should you find yourself needing this type of treatment, in "Root Canals" Flora Parsa Stay, D.D.S. alerts you to a new approach. The root canal is filled with a calcium hydroxide mixture, which expands to six to nine times its original volume. This helps induce calcification of the root, therefore, not allowing bacteria to penetrate along the canal.

Healthy Alternatives
In "Acupuncture Anaesthesia" George T. Lewith, M.A., M.R.C.G.P., M.R.C.P. explains how it is used in China for a wide variety of operations, from minor procedures to open heart surgery. In the Western medical system it is used for pain relief and could well be applicable for minor procedures' anesthesia and post-operative pain relief.

Healthy Woman Update
At least 15% of females at some point in their lives have an acute urinary tract infection. In "Cystitis" David L. Hoffmann, B.Sc. (Hons), M.N.I.M.H. explains this inflammation of the wall and lining of the urinary bladder and offers suggestions for treatment with herbs, diet, and supplements.

Vegetarian Recipe
Physician's Committee for Responsible Medicine offers you a vegetarian recipe for "Orange and Black-Eyed Pea Salad."

MIND-BODY-SPIRIT

Mind/Body Health
More and more women work outside and inside the home. Do the double demands shouldered by working moms pose a threat to their physical health? In "A Woman's Work Is Never Done" David S. Sobel, M.D. sites evidence of the physiological impact of "role overload" among working mothers, and his suggestions to help balance the demands of job and home.

Mind-Body-Spirit
Different from physical-vital energy, emotional energy creates the feeling impulse to move toward our goals; we call it motivation. In "Emotional Talent" Dan Millman explains that emotional talent is the capacity to stimulate and draw upon one's natural fountain of energy. Developing emotional talent is learning to blow into our own sails.

Healthy Bookstore - Drumming the Spirit to Life

As drumming grows popular as a spiritual as well as artistic pursuit, drummers and drumming teachers like Russell Buddy Helm step forward with instruction that goes beyond what one got in high-school band. Typically, the drums played spiritually are ethnic instruments, such as the Arabic doumbek and the African djembe, that are held between the legs or on a strap around the neck, and played with the hands. In "Drumming the Spirit to Life" Helm includes the basics on playing such drums in the text and an accompanying CD. Beyond that, he teaches such nontechnical aspects of drumming as drum-circle courtesy, how to find a teacher or group, and drumming traditions.
