HealthWorld Online a Sponsor for Council for Technology and the Individual Roundtable
HealthWorld Online was a sponsor and participant in the ninth annual Council for Technology and the Individual Roundtable entitled, "Reassessing Values: Back to People," at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Marina del Rey, CA, April 1-3, 1998. The three days of stimulating, interactive discussion with individuals such as: Nicholas Negroponte, Director of MIT Media Labs; John Sculley, former Apple CEO; Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, author of Flow theory; Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon.com; Ira Magaziner, Senior Policy Advisor from the White House; Stewart Brand, founder of Whole Earth Catalog; Bob Metcalfe, founder of Ethernet; and John Doerr, Partner of Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, was intended to help promote creativity, cooperation and constructive competition. The Roundtable succeeded admirably in achieving its intended goal.
Deadly Drug Reactions May be More Common Than Thought
Bad reactions to drugs, including serious injury and death, may be much more common than doctors previously assumed, a new study shows. Researchers calculated that adverse drug reactions may kill more than 100,000 Americans each year, according to the study, published Wednesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
Depending on how the data are interpreted, the researchers said, deaths from drug reactions were between the fourth and sixth leading cause of death in the United States in 1994.
Midlife Women Seek Estrogen Alternatives
Millions of women swear by prescription hormones to control both short-term menopausal symptoms like hot flashes and vaginal dryness, and to offset the longer-term risks of lowered estrogen levels like heart disease and osteoporosis. But many others are leery, often because they fear that prescription estrogen drugs may raise breast cancer risk 30 to 40 percent (which is true) or because they feel that all alternative remedies, especially herbs, are "natural" and therefore automatically safe (which is untrue). For many herbal alternatives, in fact, there simply aren't any data on long-term effects -- good or bad -- on breast cancer risk, says Dr. Isaac Schiff, chief of obstetrics and gynecology at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Stronger Depression Warnings Added to Acne Drug
Roche Holding AG said it's adding stronger warnings to its Accutane drug labels and notifying doctors of reports of depression and suicide in patients who have taken the drug. The current label for Accutane, a prescription drug for severe acne, already warns doctors about the risk of depression in patients. The new, stronger warning results from a small number of reports registered on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's MedWatch system, Roche said. Company spokeswoman Kellie McLaughlin noted that the majority of patients taking the drug -- teenagers -- are already at great risk for depression.

Children's
Health Update
Diarrhea, or frequent and watery stools, is the body's way of ridding itself of toxins and foreign substances. Most cases of simple diarrhea should not be suppressed too quickly. It may be healthier to allow your child's body to flush itself clean, while supporting her with adequate fluids.
In her article "Diarrhea," excerpted from
her book, Smart Medicine for a Healthier Child, Dr. Janet Zand discusses the common causes of childhood diarrhea and outlines
a comprehensive program for helping to deal with your child's diarrhea, including guidelines for conventional treatment as well as dietary guidelines and recommended nutritional supplements, herbs, homeopathic remedies, Bach Flower Remedies and acupressure.
