Eating Safely in a Polluted World: You Don't Have to Choose Between Microbes and Chemicals!":
Part II: Maintain a Safe Supply of Food and Drink
Epidemics of parasitic infection from contaminated water and of bacterial food poisoning from chicken or hamburger serve notice that the U.S. food and water supply is not safe. Pesticides and preservatives provide no protection from the current crop of microbes and pose health hazards of their own. There are several simple, effective measures you can follow to protect yourself and those you love from the effects of eating contaminated food and water, avoiding both microbial and chemical contaminants in food and drink and building resistance to them if you are exposed. This second part of Eating Safely in a Polluted World provides guidelines that will significantly reduce your exposure to disease provoking microbes in food and drink.

Children's Health Update
Emotional upset-whether anger, sadness, or fear-is a normal response to different stresses in a child's life. Children may not be able to express in words exactly what it is they are feeling. Instead, they may show their feelings by acting out in anger, by withdrawing, or by displaying physical symptoms such as vague abdominal pain, fatigue, or headache. Physical signs of stress can also include dizzy spells; a racing pulse; sweaty palms, feet, or face, not associated with physical activity; chronic headaches; trembling; hives; and insomnia. In her article "Emotional Upset," excerpted from her book, Smart Medicine for a Healthier Child, Dr. Janet Zand outlines a comprehensive program for helping your child have a healthy emotional life, including guidelines for conventional treatment, as well as dietary guidelines, recommended nutritional supplements, herbs, homeopathic remedies, acupressure and Bach Flower remedies.

Women's Health Update
Many women suffering from fibroids and endometriosis complain of major stress along with their physical symptoms. "My personal impression as a physician who has worked with women patients for close to 20 years is that stress is a significant component of many recurrent and chronic health problems, including fibroids and endometriosis," states Susan Lark, M.D., in her article Stress Reduction for Relief of Fibroids & Endometriosis. "To discount the effects of lifestyle stress on illness is a grave mistake, adds Dr. Lark. "If the physician ignores stress as a contributing factor, the patient never receives the tools or insight necessary to modify her habits and behavior to better support good health and well-being." In this excellent article, excerpted from The Fibroid Tumors & Endometriosis Self Help Book, Dr. Lark offers a comprehensive program to deal with the stress component of these conditions.
