Mother's Diet Could Prevent Allergies in Babies
New research indicates that pregnant women could help prevent their children suffering allergies, such as asthma, by eating foods rich in vitamin E. This is the first study world-wide to have shown an effect of maternal diet during pregnancy on evidence of allergy in the newborn child. We await with interest the longer term follow-up of these babies.
Government Urged to Consider Homeopathic Medicine as Prophylaxis
The U.S. Congress was urged in testimony before the House Government Reform Committee hearing ("Comprehensive Medical Care for Bioterrorism Exposure - Are We Making Evidence-Based Decisions? What are the Research Needs?") to consider the use of homeopathic medicines for both viral and bacterial illnesses associated with bioterrorism. Homeopathic medicines have a 200-year history of safe and successful use in epidemic disease of both viral and bacterial origin.
Depression, Stress Can Peak This Time of Year
Feelings and emotions during the holiday season often vary more than any at other time of the year. Excitement and happiness may shift to disappointment and sadness in a roller coaster-like fashion. For many, the holiday season produces a shift away from normal routine. Our biological/perceptual clock, containing a rhythm related to work and time off, is often deregulated during the holidays. Festivities and social activities can cause us to deviate from our normal activity cycle. Be aware. Be prepared.

Dr. Galland's Integrated
Medicine
Magnesium is the fourth most abundant mineral in your body, a necessary co-factor for hundreds of enzymes, and the most critical mineral of all for coping with stress. Stress-related diseases which run rampant through modern society, like heart attacks and high blood pressure, are often accompanied by magnesium deficiency. Unfortunately, most Americans consume diets that fail to meet the government's RDA for magnesium, and magnesium intake is even lower than average among people who develop heart disease, according to Dr. Leo Galland in "Magnesium: The Stress Reliever."
Mind Body Health Newsletter
Imagine the world without pleasure. Life would appear colorless and humorless. Human beings evolved to seek enjoyment to enhance survival. Yet, at nearly every turn pleasure has gotten a bad name. People are almost phobic about having fun. In "Healthy Pleasures" David S. Sobel, M.D. reminds us that worrying too much about anything - including calories, salt, cancer, and cholesterol - can rob our life of vitality, and that living optimistically, with pleasure, zest, and commitment enriches if not lengthens life.
Keeping Fit
Before we became such a highly industrialized, automated, and sedentary society, most Americans spent most of their day doing some form of physical activity. Today few adults do much in the way of movement. What happens is a classic example of the use it or lose it principle of human physiology. Unlike automobile engines that wear out with use, our musculoskeletal system seems to rust out with lack of use. In "Take Time To Stretch" Dr. Wayne L. Wescott explains why it is so important to do strength training to maintain muscle tissue and bone density and shares his six "Principles of Stretching."
Echoes of Silence
When we are visited by an angelic presence, we become attentive for a long while after. In "Angelic Presences Abound" Robert Rabbin states that what we call the angelic presence is the subtlety of existence that we don't pay attention to. The subtle essence of being we attribute to angels, to spirit guides, to "higher" selves, is in fact our own Self. We can become the angel we are by allowing this subtlety into our life. Don't keep holding the key to your own freedom. Put it in the door and unlock the subtle forces within your own Self.
Teeccino - Destress With Caffeine Free Herbal Coffee
Coffee drinkers may be surprised to learn that herbal coffee actually has nutritional benefits which help nourish and keep the body healthy. Coffee, on the other hand, only supplies the drug, caffeine, which stimulates your adrenal glands but does not provide energy - actually it could deplete the body's energy reserves. Teeccino is the first herbal coffee on the market - a blend of herbs, grains, fruits and nuts that are roasted, ground and brewed just like coffee. Dark, rich, and full-bodied, Teeccino brings you all the satisfaction of a robust brew with no caffeine reaction. Teeccino tastes mildly sweet from dates and figs, with only 15 calories per cup.

Healthy Bookstore
This gem of a book, "Children Learn What They Live: Parenting to Inspire Values" by Dorothy Law Nolte and Rachel Harris is an expansion of the inspirational and educational poem "Children Learn What They Live." It maintains the grace and wisdom of the original, yet adds significant insight into the process of encouraging values through example. Each of the 19 couplets of the poem is developed into a chapter--on jealousy, shame, praise, recognition, honesty, fairness, tolerance, and more--and offers a clear, constructive perspective on teaching its moral lesson. As a set of guiding principals, as teaching tools, or as gentle reminders, Nolte and Harris's approach to teaching values to children encapsulates the best in parenting wisdom.

Healthy Woman Update
Women who are anemic or have a problem with heavy menstrual bleeding tend to be very tired, so they completely stop their regular exercise program. In "Exercises for Heavy Menstrual Flow Anemia" Susan M. Lark, M.D. explains why this only makes the problem worse. Dr. Lark recommends gentle exercises, such as deep breathing exercises, progressive muscle relaxation, range-of-motion exercises to keep the joints mobile, and slow relaxed walking. These promote good oxygenation and circulation and can even help to increase energy.
Healthy Kitchen - Healthy Recipes
The winter diet is often the richest, warmest, and heaviest of the seasonal diets. It includes more cooked foods, fewer fresh foods and cold drinks, and more teas and soups to keep the body warmer. And, of course, we may need more rest and dream time in the winter. In "Winter 4-Day Menu Plan" Elson M. Haas, M.D. provides food recommendations, menu plans, and specific recipes.
Healthy Alternatives
Surely one of the most overlooked and yet most valuable modes of healing that will be rediscovered in the future of the new medicine is the fast. This is because of the increasing interest in looking to oneself for healing powers. For the fast is an inward process and cannot be entered upon only from an outer approach with any expectation of a lasting benefit. In "Fasting: The Therapeutic Fast" Evarts Loomis M.D. provides a historical review and major cautions, plus details and examples of safe fasts. He notes that most who fast make permanent changes for the better in their diets, exercise use, and finding time for daily meditation.
